Covid-19: Situation in Japan

• Japan began its vaccination campaign on 17ᵗʰ February, starting with healthcare professionals.

• On 1ˢᵗ March, the government of Japan has lifted its state of emergency in the regions of Nagoya, Gifu, Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Fukuoka. It lifted it in Tokyo and its surroundings, the last targeted regions, on 21ˢᵗ March. Although the number of confirmed cases has decreased, the authorities continue to call for vigilance, and some cities such as Tokyo are maintaining measures to make businesses close earlier.

• On 20ᵗʰ March, the authorities in charge of organising the Olympic and Paralympic Games announced that, due to the global health situation, they will not be able to welcome foreign spectators. The tickets bought by foreign spectators to attend the Games will be refunded. Read more on Tokyo 2020's statement.

• Phased measures toward resuming cross-border travel remain suspended until further notice. Check the most up-to-date information on the official Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan website.
